Game shooting Cornwall is one of the great British traditions of shooting. Hendra Farm shoot provides a variety quarry driven over the guns that will consist of Pheasants, Partridges and Mallard Ducks with bags from 150 to 200 birds per day. Game Shooting Cornwall also offers driven snipe and woodcock on certain drives, adding variety to the bag.
The birds are driven over the guns by a line of beaters from either cover crops or woodland. Game Shooting Cornwall produces Driven birds that are unpredictable. They can be fast or slow, high or low, curling on the wind or slicing downward towards the home wood. Game birds do not usually do what is expected of them!
At the Hendra Farm shoot, Ken Evans and his team will generally produce between five to seven drives in a game shooting Cornwall day. Some drives may be similar but no two will be identical. For each drive a line of between six to ten guns will be positioned to receive the birds as they are driven towards them. Each drive is from a different location on the shoot and each is designed to present different birds, high and gliding over the fields as well as shooting in woodland rides. Driving pheasants is an art and the best gamekeepers pride themselves in the quality, height achieved and the flying ability of the game. Hendra Farm Shoot has been planted with trees and cover crops to accommodate the birds and to ensure the quality of drives available on the shooting day. Game Shooting Cornwall at Hendra Farm Shoot has over 20 varying established drives that utilize the topography that Hendra Farm Shoot has to offer.
The moor drive attracts Snipe, Woodcock and Teal whilst the heights of hellfire bank, The M5 drive, Big Wood plantaton and Banana Ponds produces stunning pheasants. Duck shooting here is similarly spectacular. Hendra Farm Shoot has over 20 ponds purposefully built from which the Mallard, Teal and Canada Geese are driven over the gun line producing testing Game shooting Cornwall.
Game Shooting Cornwall and Hendra Shoot was formed in 2000 when Ken Evans purchased the shooting rights as well as the farm and buildings. Ken a master joiner by trade converted the barns into an exquisite shooting lodge, also bringing in the help of top chefs creating a luxury setting for travelling guns in Cornwall wanting to experience Game Shooting Cornwall. With the help of his brothers Mike and Robert, they set about planting cover crops and new woodlands to make a pheasant shoot on par with any in the West Country.
We at Game Shooting Cornwall know you will find the atmosphere at Hendra like no other shoot in the West Country. The Evans brothers love their game shooting. They are all fine shots in their own right but the enjoyment they get from putting on a day of shooting, as well as the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes will ensure that your day will be special. Elevenses in the field will be served between the 2nd and 3 drive with everyone joining in the banter. Lunch is served in the shoot room, a hearty stew with a glass of port. After lunch Game shooting Cornwall resumes with 2 or 3 more drives depending on the bag required.
Hendra Farm Shoot offers driven Pheasant Shooting by the day for single guns and teams of six to ten guns. Throughout the season we have the option of offering you the chance of Mallard Duck or Partridge in certain drives. During the shooting season we often see a large amount of woodcock and snipe on certain drives such as the banana pond drive, the grove and the moor drives.
We at Game Shooting Cornwall will always offer strong sporting pheasants that are testing but shootable. Driven days are offered with full hospitality including elevenses a light bite in the field, lunch and then more shooting followed by a meal back at the lodge after the day’s shooting. Expect five or six drives in the day, the majority set in beautiful Cornish rolling woodlands, including the testing MP’s drive shot in the woods, with pheasants curling high overhead.
How do the drives get their names at Game Shooting Cornwall and Hendra Shoot? Ask the regular team of beaters and picker ups that help out on a weekly basis and you will probably get 5 different answers. Travelling American gun Martin Bell renamed one drive last year by commenting to picker up Gary “Hell fire, I fired 14 cartridges for 1 pheasant on that drive” and Hell fire Bank it became! The tradition and ongoing story of Hendra Shoot is still being written, being part of the day, the experiences and the enjoyment of the entire team is of paramount importance to Ken Evans. Who knows – say the right thing at the wrong time and maybe you will have a drive named after you!
You will find our staff friendly, professional and welcoming. Hendra Farm Shoot is a traditional formal driven shoot and guests are asked to dress accordingly, well-behaved gundogs are welcomed.
